Before you consider applying for a position at Guard Up, you should consider reading the book "Good to Great" by Jim Collins. This book will give you an accurate picture of the working environment at Guard Up. Our team is extremely dedicated, disciplined, loyal and hard-working. We have no "class distinction" at Guard Up between management, staff and instructors. You’re as likely to find the CEO taking out the garbage as you will our janitorial staff.

We work hard and we play hard. Our base pay is lower than you will find from many employers, but our performance bonuses make it possible to more than double  your base hourly rate. We encourage dissenting opinions as long as everyone is on board when the decision is made.

We are very appreciative of our employees, but we do not "motivate" them. They come with their own internal motivation. Our employees regularly arrive early and work late. This is not the exception… it is the standard.

The sense of camaraderie at Guard Up is high. We often socialize together, throw parties and share hobbies. We are a diverse community with people from a variety of lifestyles, ethnicities, religions and abilities. And we are protective of this diversity.

    Course Instructor  Guard Up! Family Swordsmanship is looking for energetic, goal-oriented, team players. Part time, entry-level position for candidate with a strong sense of teamwork and a responsible work ethic .  Experience working with children required.     Admin Assistant  Guard Up! Family Swordsmanship has a part-time position open, some superb organizational and communication skills required.     Wanted: Part-Time and Full Time Youth Class Instructors and/or Summer Camp Counselors.  The best candidates are...

    • Age 18 and over with experience working with kids of various ages.
    • People who love teaching in a positive learning environment and who have afternoons or weekends available.
    • Residential and Day Camp Counselors who have background in theater or acting
    • Coaches, Teachers, Instructors or Group Leaders who are passionate about working with kids, but may not have experience in our particular activities

    References required. Summer Camp Counselor positions pay $380/week (depending on experience) plus room and board and paid training.  Instructor positions pay $10-$20/class base plus quarterly profit sharing as well as paid meetings, paid training and even paid time for curriculum development.  Offsite classes provide paid travel as well as mileage reimbursement.  Classes also have Equipment and Training Budgets for continuing instructor education. 

    Morning (8am-3pm) or Afternoon (3pm - 7pm) and/or Saturday hours as well as reliable transportation required.  Summer Sword Adventure hours are 9am-3pm for up to 8 weeks each summer.  Residential Summer Camp is Sunday to Friday.  All Instructors must attend required weekly instructor meetings held Wednesday evenings at 8:30pm.

    The best candidates for Guard Up Youth Instructors are energetic, creative, safety conscious, flexible and interested in modern teaching methodologies.  No experience in swordsmanship, fencing or martial arts is necessary.  We will train you.  All instructors at Guard Up encourage personal opinions and creative exploration from their students.  We are not a "traditional" training facility.  Our Instructors all attend mandatory weekly training in modern teaching methodology such as that described in book The Double Goal Coach by Jim Thompson and the Positive Coaching Alliance.  All candidates must subscribe to and utilize these coaching methods successfully and consistently to be accepted as an instructor at Guard Up.

    Additional information regarding Instructor positions:

    1. We require a personal interview before consideration for hire. Travel expenses related to the interview are to be covered by the applicant.
    2. Part of the interview might require a physical assessment of skill (or the ability to learn) or a teaching assessment.
    3. Note that applicants with previous experience who are not currently enrolled in Guard Up programs are not trained specifically in the curriculum that we teach and methodology we use. As such, applicants would need to enter our Instructor Training Programs until assessed and qualified to teach. Understand that this is not an issue of the type of experience for those with such. Instead, it is required to get an Instructor comfortable with our curriculum and our teaching methodology as well as our students.
    4. If accepted into the Instructor Training, actual employment is dependent upon successful completion of these programs as well as an acceptable performance level in the final assessment.
    5. Applicants who are accepted into the Instructor Training Programs are encouraged to train to become an Instructor in more than one of our course types.
    6. All paid instructor positions begin as part-time and hold the possibility of evolving to full-time with health, dental, retirement plan and vacation benefits.
    7. Applicants who can fulfill other duties or roles at Guard Up (esp. those listed below) are particularly desirable.
    8. All applicants must submit to a CORI (criminal background) check.  Candidates must also pass CPR and First Aid Certification (provided by Guard Up).

Director of Advertising and Marketing:  Excellent opportunity for talented individual with experience in Advertising Design and Marketing (especially online).  Start with a growing company due to franchise soon.  We want a career-minded person who is interested in a career path upwards.  Salary and quarterly bonuses. Position can be part time or full time with work done remotely - but must live locally for weekly meetings.  Strong and reliable communication skills required.  Online portfolio of previous work and references from past projects necessary for interview.
