Guard Up! 2009 Wizards & Warriors Summer Residential Camp

Parents:  At our Residential Summer Camp (a replica of a medieval village) campers will start their week Sunday afternoon designing a character, complete with history, culture and special skills.  Then, for the entire week, the campers (now called "Adventurers") will engage in live role playing scenarios, exciting foam weapon battles, and challenging plots with our Staff until they leave Friday afternoon.

Our entire event is designed to challenge campers with scenarios that require teamwork, creative problem solving, negotiation skills, bravery, imagination and more.  Through creative role play, campers don't just learn valuable life skills - they get to actively practice them!  This practice time allows a deeper level of understanding and retention.

All of our Counselors (Adventure Guides), staff and volunteers are over the age of 18 and are CORI and SORI background checked, certified in CPR and First Aid, and specially trained in our own instructional methodology.  We have a minimum ratio of 4:1 campers to staff onsite at all times.  We only allow 40 Adventurers per session so that each camper gets exceptional attention and plenty of interaction.

Our Camp Directors are both parents (one whose own children attend this camp).   Meghan Gardner is trained by the American Camping Association as a Camp Director and has more than 12 years of experience in running youth programs.  Randy LaRosa is certified as a Camp Director through the Boy Scouts of America, has been a Camp Director for 5 years and has been a certified K-12 music teacher for 17 years. We have a full time Health Supervisor (Licensed Nurse Practitioner) on staff during the camp season and our camp is fully licensed.  Since 2002, Guard Up Inc. has been running Summer Adventures for kids ages 6-15 in Burlington Massachusetts.

Our primary objective is to provide our campers with a powerfully positive experience that they will fondly remember for years to come... utilizing our 3 Rules of Operation (3RO) which must apply to ALL activities and are listed in order of priority:

1)  The activity must be SAFE

2)  The activity must be FUN

3)  The activity must be EDUCATIONAL

All activities are scrutinized according to the 3RO before being integrated into our programs.

We have strict rules to keep our battles safe (with special foam swords and foam "spells").  We also provide campers with an "Overload" word that allows them to exit an adventure if it's too scary.  We make sure that campers understand that this is all just pretend... and in reality, our monsters are people too!

Our facilities are located at 120 Northside Road in Charlton, Massachusetts.  All cabins are new and clean, with electricity and heating.  There are private showers available for campers as well as indoor bathrooms for each gender.  (We like to offer medieval appearances while maintaining modern comforts).

NEW!  We are looking for Parents who would like to play Zombies for a couple of hours one day... imagine getting the chance to work with our makeup artist and costume specialist to complete your transformation into an undead walking corpse!  You will be taught the specifics of safe sword play with our foam swords and then your guide will lead you on a Zombie Assault against our campers.  Give your young valiant hero a chance to save you by stopping your undead horde and changing you back into a villager!  Then we invite you to join us for the Feast of Heroes and partake in the grand storytelling.  It will be an adventure you and your child won't forget.  For more information, call us at (781) 270-4800.  We look forward to helping your children rescue you from the clutches of the walking dead.

What lurks inside the haunted castle? Trying on armor and making pieces of your own! The dark castle holds monsters and treasure Mega-Chess on our giant chess board

Campers: Have you ever wanted to LIVE the adventures you've read about or seen in the movies?  Have you dreamed of being a Hero, fighting monsters, solving mysteries and discovering treasure?  At our camp, you get to do all this and more!  Start by creating your own Character and playing a role in our realm... specially designed for you and your fellow Adventurers.

Do you enjoy the rush of battle and the taste of triumph?  Be a noble Warrior!

Do you prefer a stronger defense and special skills for healing your allies?  A warrior's best friend is a Healer!

How about researching ancient scrolls and throwing Lightening Bolts to turn the tide of the fight?  A Wizard can get the job done!

Select your Character's special skills and then create your own personalized history.
Where did you come from?  What is your family lineage?  Are you looking for something or someone from your past?  Are they looking for you?  What is your Coat of Arms... or your symbol... what does your name mean?  Are you a wandering musician... or a knight upon a quest?

Stretch your acting skills and see what you can do!  Or just play someone a lot like you.

The life of an Adventurer is never dull.   Check out some of the activities you can experience...

Armor Making:  Our Armor Smith will help you create your own pieces of chainmail or leather armor. Learn the techniques and equipment necessary for starting your own suit of armor and bring it home

Giant Chess:  Play (or learn to play) chess on our Giant-Sized Chess Board... but if you beat the local Werewolf, you'd better have your sword and friends near by!

Weapons Training:  Visit the Master-At-Arms to learn how to use your Foam Weapons... and incorporate team tactics so that your group can withstand the hordes of undead that haunt the night.

Solve the Riddles:  Visit the old Librarian to learn about the history of the town... and why it is haunted by the various evil creatures.  Search the scrolls for answers... but first you need to learn Latin!

Mix Potions:  Our Alchemy Guild will help you brush up on your chemistry and mix up various potions necessary to seal the tombs, identify cursed treasure and unveil secret messages.

Treasure Hunt:  To rid the land of evil, you must gather the ancient items and unlock their mysteries so that they can help you in your plight against the dark forces that terrorize the villagers.

Storytelling:  What good is a grand adventure if you don't have a chance to brag about it?  Learn how to weave a fantastic tale and help the local scribe record your deeds in the giant tome so that they are preserved for years to come.  Imagine returning to camp years later to see your character mentioned in the history of this grand adventure.  Reading a book is fun... but imagine having a book written about you and your friends!

Dungeon Crawling:  Need some action?  There's always something going on in the deep, dark, haunted dungeons that hold treasure, monsters and quite possibly... traps of death!

Learning sword skills and defensive formations Preparing to enter the tunnel into the haunted castle
Learning to make chainmail armor Negotiating and riddle solving

That's not all... if, by some ill turn of events, you are beaten in battle... you must visit the realm of DEATH and negotiate your way back into life.

Can you make it to the Grand Battle and the following Feast of Heroes?
